Alpina Sailing Collection Chronograph: AL-880LB4V6

by Time&Style Staff
At first glance, the bright circles of colour wrapping themselves around the top of the hour mark of this watch seem to clash with the fairly stark face design.
But they’re there for a reason, and that reason involves owning a yacht (or pretending to own a yacht).
This isn’t just a watch – it’s also a regatta timer. Those dots are used to help sailors line up with the starting line of a boat race. As boats don’t do too well from a standing start, regatta sailors sail around beforehand then, ten minutes before the race starts, are told to get ready and advance to the starting line. That’s where the circles come in – they count down an interval of 10 minutes. So if you don’t own a yacht, the timer feature could always be an useful alternative to a egg timer.
The watch, available with a black or white face, is also water-resistant to 330m, which is either a handy feature on part of the designers, or an ominous warning.

Hamilton Khaki UTC

by Time&Style Staff

This one’s for all you historians out there. Ever crave a spot of time travel back to the 1940’s? Well, if we’re being honest, we can’t quite grant you the luxury of time travel, but we can take you pretty damn close. Or at least Hamilton can.

With their new Khaki UTC, Hamilton uses inspiration garnered from their original 1940’s models, back when the watchmakers were cooking up navigational instruments in the form of marine chronometers. The Khaki UTC is a tribute to the original tools, with GMT function, a throwback to the chronometers and their integrated sidereal time (measured time relative to the motion of the stars around the earth, as opposed to that of the sun). From a yellow “old paper” dial colour, or leather resembling craftsmen aprons of yore, the Khaki UTC takes you back – but with a modern twist.

01THE ONE

by Time&Style Staff

We dig 01THE ONE. The watchmakers pride themselves in creating timepieces with a unique and creative flare. Anton Kraft, the brains behind the company, believes in creating a collection for “independent people who follow their own unique path in life and trendsetters who express their individuality by the way they dress”. We agree, always choose style over fashion. Among their impressive array of products, we’ve got an affinity for their Spinning Wheel AN06 series, especially the piece with the neon green accents. What with the colour blocking effect and bold colours seen on the runways this season, this fun and stylish watch is the perfect statement piece to add to your wardrobe this summer!

The winners of the Bol d’Or and the Bol de Vermeil will be presented with one of these 30-piece limited edition watches.

The Seafender carries a 48mm Titanium case with a Blue PVD Treatment, and a black dial with a Clous de Paris hobnail design with applied 5N gold chevrons and 5N gold hands. Contained in a specialized case is a CO960, C.O.S.C certified Automatic Chronograph movement, which is operable by its two large pushers with exclusive pushpiece-locking system. Sounds complicated enough, but trust us, this is one simple piece, and just enough nautical for the summer.

Cartier Calibre Astrotourbillon

by Time&Style Staff

After Cartier initially launched their Astrotourbillon movement last year in their Rotonde model, they have carried the mechanics over to the Calibre. The concept of the Astrotourbillon has the balance wheel revolving around the dial once a minute, with the arrow-shaped balance bridge indicating the seconds. In order to make sure that the balance of the mechanism is perfect, a platinum counterweight, which also works to reduce vibrations and shocks, has been added underneath the main dial. In order to protect the delicate inner-workings, the mechanics are housed in a lightweight 47mm titanium casing which gives a slightly sporty touch to the watch. The Calibre Astrotourbillon, or to give it its official name, the Calibre 9451 MC, will be  available in a limited run of only 100 pieces, all of which will be individually numbered.

Ulysse Nardin Chairman luxury smartphone

by Time&Style Staff

Swiss brand Ulysse Nardin are historically known for their nautical chronometers, and they have carried over that level of precision into the modern era. The Chairman, a watch-smartphone hybrid, is in the pre-order stage. The main feature of the phone is an operational mechanical watch rotor, which gives extra power to the battery in the same way that kinetic watches draw power. Coming in 12 different versions, the phones feature 32GB of memory, touchscreens that include thumb print recognition, and are constructed with over 300 parts. A docking station, made out of lacquered wood, is included. Only 1846 pieces of each of the 12 models will be made. So we recommend ordering one soon if you want to settle the debate between your friends over who has the best phone.

Christophe Claret & Couture Time

by Time&Style Staff

Held on June 5, 2011, the Encore Ballroom at the Wynn Las Vegas played host to a crowd of nearly 800 for the presentation of the Jury Prize – a watchmaking competition, put on by Couture Time, that recognizes exceptional timepieces in different categories. The Jury Prize for Innovation – for oustanding invention or innovation – was presented to Christophe Claret and his 21 Blackjack watch. A reflection of its environment, this unique watch features a dice game on its sides, roulette on the back, and blackjack on the face, with the player’s and dealer’s cards on the bottom and top, respectively. Basically, it’s a miniature casino on the go for those of you who can’t get enough.
